Hurricane Relief

We have partnered with The Humane Society of the United StatesWings of RescueAppleton International AirportGreenville Fire Department and First RespondersOshkosh Area Humane Society, and Willow Run Kennels in a far-reaching effort to help bring new light and happiness to the resilient dogs of the Houston area who have seen such heartbreak in the recent hurricane.

On September 18, 2017, Wings of Rescue flew 56 dogs in to Appleton who were surrendered to shelters in the Houston area when their families, displaced by the hurricane, were unable to keep them. The owners were aware that they would be transported to other areas to find their new homes where they believed they would have their next best chance at a life full of love and happiness. None of these wonderful dogs are strays who have families searching for them.
A specially formed team of FVHA staff and volunteers, the Greenville Fire and Rescue team, and Airport Safety met the dogs plane-side, helped them out of their transport kennels, paperwork checked, and they were loaded into our Bark Buses. Kennels were cleaned and placed back into the airplane for Wings of Rescue’s next mission.

Each dog brought to the shelter will be evaluated by our veterinarians and provided with any medical care that they need, including spay/neuter surgery.

There are several ways that you can help:

  • Adopt! We do not have every piece of information to give you on the dogs from Houston, but please fill out a general application to be pre-approved when the dogs become available.
  • Become a foster! Please call the shelter and ask to speak with Amy. There may be some dogs who could benefit from spending some time with a loving foster family before adoption.
  • Please consider making a cash donation to our Wellness Center to help us cover the extra veterinary costs of caring for the Houston dogs.
  • Purchase a collar! WearHard Collars is donating a portion of every collar sold to support the Houston dogs! Take a look at some of our dogs wearing the collars below!
