Training Classes

Most pets do well with training, and most owners find the issues they thought couldn’t be solved can be handled easily, with the right methods. FVHA offers canine training classes at the shelter several nights a week. A portion of the fees generated support the work of the shelter, and owners who attend go home with happier pets.

Puppy Basics: Step One

Learn to properly socialize and train your puppy. Class is for puppies 7 weeks to 7 months old and focuses on socialization, basic commands, handling exercises, and puppy behavior management. Puppy Basics classes are taught on Tuesdays evenings. Dogs must be up-to-date on vaccinations.

Second Step: Manners Class

Learn how to teach your adult dog manners. Class is for dogs 7 months and older and focuses on sitting for attention, waiting at the door, walking nicely on a leash and other basics of good dog manners. Second Step classes are Wednesdays evenings. Dogs must be up-to-date on vaccinations.

Puppy Basics and Second Step classes are led by Certified Veterinary Technician and Certified Pet Dog Trainer and Behaviorist Lynne Shaw of Golden Touch Training. To learn when these classes will be offered or for more information, contact Lynne at (920) 734-6625.

Canine Good Citizen class

If you want to have fun with your dog and have his or her behavior be the envy of your neighborhood, attend classes to prepare your canine companion to receive a Canine Good Citizen (CGC) certification. CGC teaches responsible dog ownership and certifies dogs that have the training and behaviors needed to make them reliable, well-behaved members of their families and communities. Both pure breed and mixed breeds are welcome. Dogs must be spayed or neutered and up-to-date on vaccinations.

Skills taught will include but are not limited to:

  • Sitting politely for petting
  • Coming when called
  • Sit/down stay command
  • Good behavior when meeting another dog
  • Right behavior when walking on a leash
