Most pets do well with training, and most owners find the issues they thought couldn’t be solved can be handled easily, with the right methods. FVHA offers canine training classes at the shelter several nights a week. A portion of the fees generated support the work of the shelter, and owners who attend go home with happier pets.
Puppy Basics: Step One
Learn to properly socialize and train your puppy. Class is for puppies 7 weeks to 7 months old and focuses on socialization, basic commands, handling exercises, and puppy behavior management. Puppy Basics classes are taught on Tuesdays evenings. Dogs must be up-to-date on vaccinations.
Second Step: Manners Class
Learn how to teach your adult dog manners. Class is for dogs 7 months and older and focuses on sitting for attention, waiting at the door, walking nicely on a leash and other basics of good dog manners. Second Step classes are Wednesdays evenings. Dogs must be up-to-date on vaccinations.

If you want to have fun with your dog and have his or her behavior be the envy of your neighborhood, attend classes to prepare your canine companion to receive a Canine Good Citizen (CGC) certification. CGC teaches responsible dog ownership and certifies dogs that have the training and behaviors needed to make them reliable, well-behaved members of their families and communities. Both pure breed and mixed breeds are welcome. Dogs must be spayed or neutered and up-to-date on vaccinations.

The STAR Puppy Program is designed to get dog owners and their puppies off to a good start. When you complete six training sessions with your puppy (up to 1 year old) with FVHA’s canine behaviorist and AKC Approved CGC Evaluator Carol Beck, your puppy is eligible for the S.T.A.R. (Socialization, Training, Activity, Responsibility) Puppy Program! Upon completion of the sessions, Carol will administer the S.T.A.R. Puppy test. If your pup passes the test, you will be able to enroll in the S.T.A.R. Puppy Program! All breeds are welcome.

Bonding 101 is a fun and informational class that will help you and your dog develop that special bond. Class is taught by Carol Beck, who has 20 years of experience training dogs and owns K9 Pride Dog Training. Class size is limited to 12 people and their dogs. Dogs must be up-to-date on vaccinations.
